Radiation ovens: are microwave ovens safe?
By David NobleContributing writer for End the Lie
The convenience of using a microwave instead of a conventional oven is easy to see. Being able to cook a meal in a matter of minute’s means less hassle and work in the kitchen. This has led to roughly 90% of households in the US using microwaves for meal preparation. In fact nowadays very few homes or restaurants are without them. The big question is are they safe? Most people are of the opinion that anything that has not been tested for safety would not be allowed on the market. But the fact that the likes of aspartame and Sodium fluoride have been allowed tells us that this is not true. It is clear that our government has sold its soul to the big corporations and are more interested in lining their own pockets than the welfare of the American people.
It is a sad fact nowadays that the only way you can guarantee if something is safe is to check it out for yourself. The great thing about the internet is that it makes this relatively simple to do. While there is a lot of bad information on the net this can be avoided by using reliable sites like NaturalNews and Infowars. These are two sites that I rely heavily on for getting information for my articles. Both sites provide links in their articles so that you can check the source of their information and make up your own minds.
As to the question whether microwave ovens are safe this is what I have found out. An experiment conducted at home for a high school science fair five years ago gives us some insight as to the safety of these microwaves. This experiment showed microwaved water given to a plant causes the plant to wither and die within days. While an identical plant given water which was boiled on a conventional stove grew normally during the same time period.
This piece of information alone would be enough to convince me not to use a microwave, but I know that most will need more convincing so lets look at what else I found out.
An article on NaturalNews by Paul Fassa had this to say
Unbiased research has produced evidence that eating microwaved food is an invitation for cancer. Those research results are usually banned or overturned and ignored for the sake of business as usual for the microwave oven manufacturers. After all, the masses of convenience oriented consumers have created quite a lucrative demand.
Early warnings against microwaving mostly involved warming baby’s formula or stored mother’s breast milk. In 1992, Stanford research discovered that microwaving formula at low heat destroyed most of the nutrients. Furthermore, the researchers were shocked to find that over 90% of the diseases protecting agents in mother’s breast milk were eliminated by microwave warming.
How many mothers use microwaves to warm baby’s formula or breast milk ignorant of the damage they could be doing to their baby. While some warnings to the these dangers have been made public, for example
Young Families, the Minnesota Extension Service of the University of Minnesota, published the following in 1989:
“Although microwaves heat food quickly, they are not recommended for heating a baby’s bottle. The bottle may seem cool to the touch, but the liquid inside may become extremely hot and could burn the baby’s mouth and throat. Also, the build-up of steam in a closed container, such as a baby bottle, could cause it to explode. Heating the bottle in a microwave can cause slight changes in the milk. In infant formulas, there may be a loss of some vitamins. In expressed breast milk, some protective properties may be destroyed. Warming a bottle by holding it under tap water, or by setting it in a bowl of warm water, then testing it on your wrist before feeding may take a few minutes longer, but it is much safer.”
Also Dr. Lita Lee of Hawaii reported in the December 9, 1989 Lancet:
“Microwaving baby formulas converted certain trans-amino acids into their synthetic cis-isomers. Synthetic isomers, whether cis-amino acids or trans-fatty acids, are not biologically active. Further, one of the amino acids, L-proline, was converted to its d-isomer, which is known to be neurotoxic (poisonous to the nervous system) and nephrotoxic (poisonous to the kidneys). It’s bad enough that many babies are not nursed, but now they are given fake milk (baby formula) made even more toxic via microwaving.”
These warnings are to few and do not get enough coverage. In 1991 there was a lawsuit in Oklahoma after a hip surgery patient, Norma Levitt died from a simple blood transfusion after the nurse had warmed the blood in a microwave oven. Heating the blood in the microwave had altered the blood and it killed her.
Dr. Hans Ulrich Hertel, now retired worked as a food scientist with one of the major Swiss food companies that do business on a global scale. In 1991 together with another researcher he published a research paper indicating that food cooked in microwave ovens could pose a greater risk to health than food cooked by conventional means. The conclusions of this study were as follows…
Microwaving food resulted in:
Increased cholesterol levels
Decreased numbers of leukocytes (white blood cells), which can suggest poisoning
Decreased numbers of red blood cells
Production of radiolytic compounds
Decreased haemoglobin levels, which could indicate anemia
While some claim that Dr. Hertels research does not stand up to the scientific rigors of the field his findings are never the less worrying. Twenty years of Russian research and German studies going as far back as 1942, back up Dr. Hertels claims and provide a strong argument against the safety of microwave cooking. The results of this research along with pages from the Lawyers Medical Cyclopaedia which includes the findings of Dr. Hertels research can be found here.
I for one will not eat anything that has been cooked in a microwave and have received a lot of ridicule from people including members of my own family because of this and my distrust of GM foods. After spending years eating unhealthy food and using microwaved processed meals for convenience, I got to the point where I was suffering heartburn nearly every night. I also suffered from sore joints, and was for ever catching colds and getting ill. About 3 years ago I decided to change the way that I lived. Out went the microwave and in came a diet of mainly organic food. I now try to avoid GM foods whenever possible and eat more fruit and raw vegetables. Heartburn and stiff joints are now a thing of the past and I have not had a cold in 3 years. Now even the thought of one of those processed meals prepared in a microwave turns my stomach. I will happily live with the ridicule if it means that I am healthier.
