About

How Does the Global Entry Program Work?
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Though intended for frequent international travelers, there is no minimum number of trips necessary to qualify for the program. Participants may enter the United States by using automated kiosks located at select airports.

At airports, program participants proceed to Global Entry kiosks, present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place their fingertips on the scanner for fingerprint verification, and make a customs declaration. The kiosk issues the traveler a transaction receipt and directs the traveler to baggage claim and the exit.

Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and interview before enrollment.

While Global Entry's goal is to speed travelers through the process, members may be selected for further examination when entering the United States. Any violation of the program's terms and conditions will result in appropriate enforcement action and revocation of the traveler's membership privileges.

Q: Where do I find my Trusted Traveler membership number?
A: Find your Trusted Traveler's membership number by logging into your Global Online Enrollment System (GOES) account. The membership number is listed toward the bottom of the page. The membership number is also on the back of Trusted Traveler cards.

For more information about finding your membership number, click here

Q: Where can I find more information about tsa_large_thumb Expedited Screening Initiative?
A: On Oct. 4, 2011 the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) launched an expedited screening initiative program. CBP has partnered with TSA on this Department of Homeland Security initiative, which is designed to help TSA focus resources on higher-risk and unknown passengers while expediting the process for lower-risk and known passengers whenever possible.

Q:What do I do if the kiosk issues me a receipt marked with an “X”?
A: The purpose of the kiosk receipt is to indicate to a CBP officer that you have successfully used the kiosk. In most cases this receipt also exempts you from the requirement to complete a paper CBP declaration (CBP form 6059B). The CBP officer at the egress control point (after baggage claim) will confirm that the receipt belongs to you and will collect it as you exit the baggage control area. Many airports have a designated line for Global Entry members at the egress control point for expedited exit from the CBP area.

If the kiosk receipt has an “X” printed on it, then you must report to a CBP officer. Please report to the nearest staffed CBP passport control station. You do not have to get back in line. The CBP officer at the passport control booth will review your documents, determine the reason the “X” was printed on the receipt and either release you from there or refer you to “secondary” for additional processing.

The “X” can mean many different things: random inspection; you have items to declare; you have duty to pay; you have agriculture products that need to be examined; your membership may need review; your fingerprints may not have matched, the system may have trouble completing the transaction; you may have timed out on one of the screens, or other issues.

You must have the “X” cleared before proceeding the egress control point referenced above, or you will be directed back to passport control for processing.

Q: Will Global Entry be expanding to other airports?
A: CBP continues to expand Global Entry to additional airports. Expansion will be based on international passenger volumes.

Q: How do I add NEXUS to my existing Global Entry membership?
A: After logging in to GOES (https://goes-app.cbp.dhs.gov/), on the GOES home page under the Program Membership(s) section, click on the "Manage Membership" button. On the next page, click on the "Add Trusted Traveler Program" button. Make any informational change necessary. On the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler Program List page, select the checkbox next to the NEXUS option. On the next page you will see the NEXUS logo. There will be required data you will need to provide including questions that you will have to answer. (Some of these questions are very similar). Once all the application information is entered/ corrected you will need to certify your application and pay the fee.

Q: If I am a current Global Entry member, how do I update my passport information?
A: All Global Entry members can update their passport information through their GOES account. This applies only to passports that do not include a name change. If you do not have a GOES account, please visit the website and create an account.

Q: Can I join Global Entry if I am not a U.S. citizen or U.S. lawful permanent resident?
A: Global Entry is also available to citizens of the Netherlands who are enrolled Privium, Canadian NEXUS members and Korean SES members. Global Entry is also available to citizens of Mexico. Other countries will be added to this list soon.

Q: Do new members automatically receive a Global Entry card?
A: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will begin issuing Global Entry radio frequency identification (RFID) cards on July 12, 2011 to qualified U.S. citizens, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) and Mexican citizens (not already in possession of a SENTRI card) who are approved for membership in Global Entry. There is no additional cost for the RFID card as it will be included in the application fee.

Q: Do current members approved prior to July 12, 2011 automatically receive a Global Entry card?

Q: Must I obtain a GE card?
A: No, it is not necessary to obtain a Global Entry card to continue using your program membership at airport kiosks. A Global Entry card is only required for use at the SENTRI and NEXUS lanes coming into the United States.

Q: How do I request a Global Entry card?
A: First, log in to your GOES account and click on the "Manage Membership" button. Next, click on the "Request for Global Entry Card" button. Finally, complete the application and pay the $15.00 fee. Further instructions can be found here.

Q: Do I have to pay anything to register my vehicle in SENTRI?
A: If you register your vehicle in SENTRI as part of your initial application, there is no fee.
